Anchor
The Anchor motif on a gravestone is commonly interpreted as hope, steadfastness, Christian faith or a seafaring life. It has a comparatively well-supported traditional reading; inscription, date, location and neighboring symbols should always be checked before drawing a biographical conclusion.

- Check whether the object is paired with trade initials, a uniform emblem, scripture or another tool.
- Read the inscription and nearby family markers before treating the motif as biographical evidence.
